This workshop guides school leaders, instructional coaches, and educators toward implementing a research-aligned, system-level Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to improve reading improvement in elementary and middle schools. Grounded in the science of reading and system-level change, participants learn to make data-driven decisions and build collaborative teams that improve over time.
The presenters offer tools, strategies, and protocols to strengthen reading outcomes for all students, including multilingual learners and students with disabilities. Participants engage with content to build foundational knowledge of reading science, design robust systems of support, and devlelop leadership practices to strengthen implementation across all MTSS tiers.
Participants leave with an actionable plan for strengthen their school’s reading MTSS framework through a system-wide lens.
Learning Outcomes
Explain the science of reading and its implications for using MTSS for reading instruction and assessment.
Identify critical components and processes for delivering fully guided reading instruction aligned with research.
Analyze assessment data and map assessments within the MTSS framework to guide instruction and intervention.
Describe foundational MTSS system levers for change and team functions critical for sustainable reading improvement at the school level.
Facilitate collaborative team processes using data protocols to identify reading performance gaps and plan system-level improvements.
Apply structured protocols and data-driven strategies to improve Tier 1 classroom instruction and Tiers 2 and 3 interventions.
Develop next steps and intensification strategies for students requiring additional support within the MTSS framework.
Sarah Brown, PhD, has held roles such as a professional learning leader in the ed tech assessment industry, bureau chief leading special education and multitiered system of supports implementation for the state of Iowa, district special education director, professional learning administrator, and school psychologist. Professionally, she’s interested in implementing MTSS at multiple levels of the education system and improving systems to support high achievement for every student. She earned her doctorate in school psychology from Northern Illinois University.
Stephanie Stollar, PhD, is passionate about using multitiered systems of supports (MTSS) as the framework for helping all students become skilled readers. As an education specialist, Dr. Stollar advises the next generation of education policy leaders in her role as an assistant professor at Mount St. Joseph University. She served as a vice president at Acadience Learning, provided training and consultation to hundreds of school districts, worked as an assistant professor of school psychology, and has served as a school psychologist. She earned her doctorate in school psychology from the University of Cincinnati. Stephanie believes that by supporting all educators, high achievement is possible for every student.
